HOW CAN THE MANITOBA CONSTRUCTION SECTOR COUNCIL HELP ME?

Launched in January of 2009, the Manitoba Construction Sector Council exists so that the human resource needs of the construction industry in Manitoba are advanced.

The MCSC is comprised of the following sector representative organizations: Construction Association of Rural Manitoba; Manitoba Building and Construction Trades Council; Manitoba Heavy Construction Association; Manitoba Home Builders' Association; Winnipeg Construction Association.

A career in construction continues to be a wise and stable choice both in the short and long term. One of the tasks of MCSC is to assist the sector to meet the training and workforce supply needs of this dynamic sector.

With this in mind, MCSC has been busy in its inception, setting out to identify the training needs of our industry, in an effort to provide or facilitate appropriate training opportunities to meet that demand.

Manitoba Construction Sector Council can assist you by either providing direct training opportunities or directing you to a number of different programs and services to address your company's human resource challenges.

Some examples of programs and services:

On-the-Job Mentorship/Training Program:
This pilot project has wrapped up and announcements will follow on the ongoing delivery and facilitation of mentorship in the workplace. The pilot was highly successful and extremely well received. 64 apprentices have received the learner orientation; 45 journeypersons have received the mentor orientation; and 100+ individuals have received program information.

Building Supervisors for Tomorrow:
BST has been designed to prepare first time supervisors, or those individuals just looking to brush up on their skills, on their journey into management. Understanding how busy people are with work and family time, this program has been developed in modular hours, with each module running anywhere from four to six hours depending on the topic, and not in any specific order. This delivery system is more flexible than any other program currently offered. It's affordable and upon completion of approximately 60 module hours (13 modules), a certificate will be earned and awarded.

Pre-Employment Construction Training Program:
This program has been designed to provide individuals with all of the necessary "tools" to enter the construction workforce. From WHMIS to First Aid/CPR, Ladder Safety to Fall Protection, PECT. Once the theoretical portion is successfully complete, the students undergo job placements with a Manitoba Employer. These programs have proven to be quite successful. The only limitation for continuing offerings of this course will be the availability of job placements by employers. If your company is in the need of entry level workers who have received quality well rounded pre-employment training, then we want to hear from you. If there is sufficient demand, courses can be tailored to a particular trade, sub-sector or geographic region.

Construction Career Expo:
The third annual Manitoba Construction Career Expo took place on May 11, 2011 at the Red River Exhibition Grounds in Winnipeg. The event is designed to encourage high school students to explore a career in the construction industry, through hands-on demonstrations from industry leaders and trade associations. Nearly 1400 students and teachers from across the province attended.

MCSC/CSC e-Learning Centre:
The MCSC is a local distributor of a number of Construction Sector Council E-learning Centre courses. Courses include:

  • Pipeline Construction Safety Training
  • National Construction Safety Awareness
  • Introduction into Confined Spaces
  • First Level Supervisory Program
  • Introduction to Construction Estimating
  • Introduction to BIM
  • Communication, Negotiation, Conflict Resolution
  • Construction Project Management

In most instances these courses have been certified by CCA for Gold Seal Credits.

Specific Sub-Sector Offerings:
MCSC can work with a specific industry sub-sector or group, or company to undertake studies and projects. Examples to date have included a study for the Roofers Contractors Association of Manitoba and a heavy equipment simulator study for the Manitoba Heavy Construction Association.

Helping Companies Find a Skilled Workforce:
MCSC works cooperatively with a number of existing programs which are designed to train a skilled workforce, and/or attract individuals to construction. In most cases there are many potential employees looking for work placements. If you are potentially interested in these programs, then we would love to hear from you.

Some Examples include:

  • Workplace Integration of Skilled Newcomers (WISNIT)
  • Centre for Aboriginal Human Resource Development (CAHRD)
  • BUILD
  • Iceland-Manitoba Labour Cooperation
  • Workplace Essential Skills Training
  • Career Trek
  • RRC Mobile Training Lab
  • Employment Projects of Winnipeg
Here's what training participants think about our training offerings:
"It has been a few days since our Conflict Resolution course …, and I can already see its beneficial effect on our staff. … I would sincerely recommend this course to any Contractor wanting to strengthen his Company and do his part in elevating the climate of the Manitoba Construction Industry."
